Lynna Brooke
W. Sutherland Owner and Creator of the eMagistra Program
Lynna Sutherland and her husband Matthew
began eMagistra in June of 2004. As a 2001 graduate of Randolph-Macon College where she was a student of the Classics Department and the Education Department, Mrs. Sutherland received many requests to tutor and teach Latin. Because of her full time position teaching second
and third grade at Beaverdam Elementary School in Hanover County, Mrs. Sutherland had difficulty finding the time to meet with students in a one-on-one setting often enough
to provide a quality course of Latin study. The option of a web-based course, however, was an idea that provided the
flexibility needed for Mrs. Sutherland to offer a
quality program of instruction and families to be able to learn on their own schedule.
Accomplishments and Commendations: - Lynna Sutherland was a three-year recipient of
the Robert Eppes Jones scholarship in Classics while attending Randolph-Macon College.
- Mrs. Sutherland passed the
Tek.Xam - an assessment of computer and technology skills offered through the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
- Mrs. Sutherland graduated second in her class, Magna Cum Laude as an honor student from Randolph-Macon
College.
- At the time of her graduation, she also received awards for outstanding academics in Education and
in Latin.
- Mrs. Sutherland served for three years as co-Technology Coach for Beaverdam Elementary School, a position
that involves training and supporting other teachers in their use of technology in education.
- Mrs. Sutherland organized
and lead a monthly Latin Club which she founded in 2002, attended by more than 50 third, fourth and fifth grade
students at Beaverdam Elementary School. In 2005, the National Mythology Exam and the Exploratory Latin Exam
were taken by more than 15 students from the Latin Club.
- Mrs. Sutherland was nominated by her peers to be Beaverdam
Elementary School's 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year.
- Mrs. Sutherland has training and experience in a wide
variety of areas applicable to education, such as: Brain Research, Learning Styles, Project CRISS (a program of tools and
strategies for reading comprehension across the curriculum) Website Development and Database Management
